Convert Scanned PDF to Word

What to expect when your PDF is a scan—and how to get the best editable result.

Scanned PDFs vs Text PDFs

Scanned documents

A “text” PDF was created from a computer document (e.g. exported from Word)—it contains real text and formatting that our converter can extract. A scanned PDF is made from photos or scans of paper pages; each page is an image. There’s no underlying text until OCR (optical character recognition) is applied. When you convert a scanned PDF to Word with CandlyConverter, the result may be an image embedded in the Word file, or we may attempt to recognize text depending on the file. For best editable text from scans, use a clear, high-resolution scan and consider using a dedicated OCR tool first, then convert the resulting PDF.

Try our PDF to Word converter with your scanned PDF to see the result.

Getting the Best Result from Scans

Quality of the scan matters. A clean, straight, high-resolution scan (e.g. 300 DPI) gives better results than a blurry or skewed photo. If the PDF already has an invisible text layer (some scanners add OCR when creating the PDF), our converter may be able to extract that text into Word. If the PDF is image-only, you might get images in the Word document—you can still work with them (resize, add text boxes) or run the pages through an OCR service first to get a PDF with text, then convert that to Word. We focus on PDF-to-Word conversion; for heavy OCR needs, dedicated OCR software or online tools may be useful.

For standard (non-scanned) PDFs, our tool typically produces fully editable Word documents with minimal cleanup.

When to Use Our Converter

Use CandlyConverter for any PDF—including scanned ones. If the PDF has selectable text (you can highlight and copy in a reader), conversion to Word will usually preserve that text. If it’s scan-only, you’ll at least get a Word file with the pages as images, which you can annotate or combine with other content. For mixed documents (some text, some scanned pages), you’ll get a mix of editable text and images. No sign-up is required; upload and download in seconds. Your files are processed securely and are not stored.

Summary

Scanned PDFs are image-based, so editable text may require OCR. Our PDF to Word tool works with all PDFs: text PDFs convert to fully editable Word; scanned PDFs may convert to Word with images or with text if the PDF already has an OCR layer. For the best experience with scans, use clear, high-quality PDFs and consider OCR preprocessing if you need perfect text extraction. For normal text PDFs, our converter is fast, free, and requires no installation.
